A score that shows its work.
The Internet Panic Index is a compact view of vendor-reported operational trouble. It is not sentiment analysis, a market forecast or proof that a service works for every user.
What the number means
Each tracked service exposes an official public status endpoint. Its current status maps to an impact factor: operational = 0, minor = 0.25, major = 0.65 and critical = 1. Services also receive a coarse reach weight from 2 to 5. The index is the reach-weighted share of responding services that is currently impaired.
The result is rounded to the nearest whole number. A score of zero means no responding source reports active impairment. A score of 100 would mean every responding tracked service reports a critical outage.
Confidence and missing data
A failed request is marked unknown; it is never treated as an outage. Data coverage is the share of total service weight that responded. If coverage falls below 65%, the index is withheld. This prevents a partial collection failure from masquerading as calm—or panic.

Version 1 monitors 18 official status pages across AI, cloud, data, developer tools, payments, communications, work and commerce. The source links shown beside incidents lead directly to vendor-controlled pages.

Reach weights
Weights are deliberately broad and change infrequently. They estimate the relative blast radius of a major incident across the internet economy; they do not rank company quality, revenue or importance to any specific user. A changelog will accompany any material methodology update.
Known limitations
- Official status pages can lag real user impact.
- A vendor may report an incident affecting only one region or component.
- The index covers a selected stack, not the whole internet.
- Reach weights are editorial and necessarily approximate.
- Two users can experience different availability at the same moment.
Future independent signals will be labeled separately and will not silently alter this vendor-reported series.
